This gorgeous still life by Lubin Baugin, a French painter, exemplifies the sensory joy shared by both games and food. (And music, for that matter.)
Each component of the still life—the chessboard, the upended lute, the crusty loaf of bread—corresponds to one of the five senses.
One thing I love about this painting is how it expresses sensuality even through static objects. Although the vase seems ordinary, it resonates on a deeper level: that of scent, of memory, of love.
With the chessboard—and even to some extent the lute—Baugin adds a playful element to the work.
“The Five Senses” is currently on display at the Louvre in Paris.
